Desks Materials and Surface Coatings

Desk Materials

Two types of materials are used in construction of most modern desks.

Particle Board:
This is an engineered wood product manufactured from sawmill shavings, wood chips, even saw dust or some similar wood particles, and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded.

MDF:
Medium-density fiberboard is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down softwood into wood fibers, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.

Surface Coatings

To improve appearance, wear resistance and scratch resistance, a thin film of material is applied evenly to each side of the board. There are 3 types of finish coatings.

Melamine
3 mm thick melamine resin is used to saturate decorative papers that are directly laminated onto particle board. It is available in a large number of colors and patterns.

Laminate
This is a material constructed by uniting two or more layers of material together. The process of creating a laminate is lamination, which in common parlance refers to the placing of something between layers of plastic and sealing them with heat and/or pressure, usually with an adhesive.

Wood Weneer
Veneer refers to thin slices of wood, usually thinner than 3 mm , that are typically glued onto particle board or medium density fiberboard.
